Semantic Peculiarities ofIdiomatic Expressions Interpreting

Weshall now take a close look at some peculiarities ofidioms. An significant fact that has to be stressed is that idioms are not only colloquial expressions, as a lot of people think. They may emerge in formal style and in colloquial speech. They may appear in verse or in the language of Shakespeare and the Bible.
Idioms are used widely, that is why an experienced Russian translator is simply obliged to master certain techniques for translation of idioms from English to Russian, and for their translation from Russian to English.
What, then, is an idiomatic expression? One may say that an idiom is some quantity of elements which, if found in the same place, mean something unique from the separate phrases of the idiomatic expression when they stand separately. Other idioms are absolutely regular and reasonable in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. English language is very rich in idioms. Actually, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; maybe he does not even understand that an idiom which he uses is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically incorrect causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes seen from the vocabulary.
